Between June 16 and 19 the "Play Fair" campaign
was launched in the USA as the torch travelled between LA
and New York.
As part of the campaign Oxfam America and the AFL-CIO
supported Rep. Jan Schakowsky in her effort to introduce
H.R. 4988, the "Play Fair at the Olympics Act",
a bill which would require companies receiving licenses
from the US Olympics Committee to observe internationally
recognized worker rights. The bill was introduced in July
2004 as an effort to increase attention to this issue in
the lead-up to the Olympics in Athens.
In addition, Oxfam America sponsored a campaign website
www.playbytherules.org. From this website, the campaign
generated over 20,000 online actions, which took the form
of online postcards to the CEO of Fila and the Head of the
US Olympics Committee.
