Ireland Action

On July 26th 2004 Oxfam Ireland presented the president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Patrick Hickey with a selection of the actions the Irish public have taken asking the Council to play fair at the Olympics. The Council has been supportive of the campaign and has sent a letter to the IOC about their concerns. When the Olympics finish the Council has agreed to meet with Oxfam Ireland and the Irish Council of Trade Unions to discuss future sponsorship and licensing agreements.

Through the action cards the Irish public ask sportswear companies and Olympic Councils to Play Fair at the Olympics. Oxfam Ireland staff and campaigners dressed in Olympic events reinforce the message. They represent many different countries around the world including; Nigeria, Peru, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, Sweden, NZ, England, Spain and Ireland.

The Olympic Quilt in Ireland

Many Irish volunteers used their creative flair to make patches to add to the Olympics Quilt that eventually ended its international journey in Athens. The quilt was full of imaginative and colourful patches depicting labour abuses of sportswear workers throughout the world. The Irish Olympic Quilt turned out a great success with up to eight newspapers covering the action.

Sporty "Play Fair" actions all over Ireland

At mini-marathons in Belfast and Dublin campaigners carried large colourful foam vests featuring "Play Fair" campaign slogans. There has also been a campaign presence at the multi-cultural sports festival in Santry, Dublin and at most of the big Trade Union conferences around Ireland. Irish campaigners furthermore distributed 50 000 Olympic leaflets targeting Fila and Kappa at the Munster Gaelic football final last weekend and had an upsurge in sign on as a result.
