Up to 330 campaign actions in France

After a refusal from the police to authorize a Play Fair event during the torch relay and negotiation with Paris town, the collective De l'éthique sur l'étiquette finally organised their demonstration a day before the arrival of the torch. This Thursday, the 24th of June, a 3 hour demonstration was held in the Trocadéro gardens, in front of the Eiffel tower featuring theatrical performances, slogans, posters, a 4.5 metre high alternative Olympic flame, percussion music from Brazil and giant letters forming the question: "Olympics, made in human rights?". Several media were present: radios, journalists, and some TV reporters.
On the following day campaigners formed the same message on the Pont des Arts (Arts bridge) during the passage of the official Olympic Torch. Campaigners wore T-shirts with the slogan : "Olympics, made in human rights?".
On July 9, "Play Fair" campaigners took up positions close to the Tour de France finish on the route Bonneval-Angers. The participants of the Tour de France 2004 were welcomed at the finish with a message to "play fair." In this way attention was drawn to the bad working conditions of workers in the sportswear industry.
At the regional level 330 campaign actions were organised all over France by 120 local networks in 155 towns. The campaign actions included conferences, information stalls, musical workshops, bare-foot-demonstrations (to protest that we cannot find fair shoes), educative actions in schools, press conferences, exhibitions in public spaces, and actions during national or local sport events. The different events were supported by sportsmen and -woman, celebrities (please find their names on www.ethique-sur-etiquette.org/petition.htm) and municipalities. At the end of June 2004 already 100.000 petitions had been signed in France.
