Olympic Campaign in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, the National Garments Workers Federation started the Olympic Campaign on the 19th of March 2004. The rally started at the central place of the capital Dhaka. Several hundreds of garment workers participated in the rally. After having passed some of the main streets the rally was finished at the corner of Paltan.

Before starting the rally, the workers were addressed by several speakers, among others Amirul Haque Amin, general secretary of the NGWF, Miss Shahida Sarker, vice president, Miss Nurun Nahar, vice president and Miss Safia Pervin, treasurer of the federation.

The speakers declared: "The Olympic games will be held from 13th to 29th august in Athens, the capital city of Greece. Multinational companies related with sportswear and garments like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Puma, Fila, Umbro, Asics, Lotto, Mizun, Kappa and New Balance earn billions of Taka from their business. Many of them sponsor the Olympics for their publicity, name and fame. But these MNC's are totally irresponsible about the workers in their sub-contacting factories in the third world like Bangladesh. For the interest of gaining more and more profit and quicker shipment, they don't bother to think or care about the workers in the factories. Workers in producing countries are facing a lot of problems. Many of the workers have a receiving wage of TK.800/($14) per month. The majority of the workers is working 12 to 16 hours per day and 7 days a week. Many of them are working in unsafe and unhealthy conditions. The majority of them do not have the right to organize or the right to bargain.
For the ongoing pressure of consumers in developed countries the MNC's are now saying that they have a code of conduct. This code of conduct seems nice and positive. But the MNC's are not serious about their claimed code of conduct. In the factories this code is not being followed, and MNC's are not taking proper initiatives to force implementation."
The NGWF announced a month-long "Olympic Campaign Programme" beginning on March 22. The programme included the submission of memorandum to Bangladesh Olympic Committee, sending a letter to the IOC on March 23, (garment)workers' mobilizations-in Dhaka, Chittagong, Savar, Tongi and a joint meeting of garment workers federations and NGOs in Dhaka.
